If you’re learning to drive in Christchurch, Dorset, there are important changes coming to the DVSA driving test booking system that every learner needs to know.
From 12 May 2026, the DVSA is changing the rules around who can book and manage a practical car driving test. These changes affect learner drivers across England, Scotland and Wales — including learners here in Christchurch, Bournemouth, Poole, and the wider BCP area.
At Murphy’s Driving Tuition, we want to make sure our pupils are prepared, informed, and ready to avoid unnecessary delays.
What’s Changing from 12 May 2026?
The DVSA is introducing new rules to make the driving test booking system fairer and reduce misuse by third-party resellers and automated booking systems.
Here are the key changes learner drivers in Christchurch need to know:
1. Learners Must Book Their Own Driving Test
From 12 May 2026, only the learner driver can book their practical car driving test using the official GOV.UK system. Driving instructors will no longer be allowed to book tests on behalf of pupils.
That means if you’re taking lessons in Christchurch or the surrounding BCP area, you’ll need to:
book your own practical driving test
use your own GOV.UK login details
confirm that you are the learner taking the test
At Murphy’s Driving Tuition, we can still guide you through the process and advise you when you’re ready — but the booking must be made by you.
2. Instructors Can No Longer Change or Manage Your Test
This is one of the biggest updates.
From 12 May 2026, driving instructors can no longer:
book a practical driving test for a pupil
change a pupil’s test date
cancel a pupil’s test
swap a pupil’s test with another learner
Only the learner taking the test can do this.
This means learners in Christchurch must take more responsibility for managing their own test booking.
3. You Can Only Change Your Driving Test Twice
The DVSA has already reduced the number of times a learner can change a car driving test booking.
Learners can now only make 2 changes to a booked practical car driving test.
This includes:
changing the date
changing the time
changing the test centre
swapping with another learner
After 2 changes, you’ll need to cancel the test and book a new one.
That’s why it’s more important than ever to:
book when you’re genuinely test-ready
choose your test centre carefully
avoid unnecessary changes
4. Test Centre Changes Will Be Restricted from 9 June 2026
From 9 June 2026, learners will only be able to move their test to one of the 3 nearest test centres to their current booking.
This is especially important for learners in the Christchurch and BCP area, where local test centre availability can already be competitive.
If you book a practical test locally, your future change options may be limited to nearby centres such as:
Bournemouth
Poole
Dorchester (depending on your original booking location)
This means booking the right test centre first time is now much more important.
What This Means for Learner Drivers in Christchurch
For learners taking driving lessons in Christchurch, these new rules make planning ahead more important than ever.
At Murphy’s Driving Tuition, we recommend:
Be Sure You’re Test Ready
Don’t rush to book just because you find an early slot. Make sure your instructor agrees you’re ready to take your test confidently.
Book Carefully
Choose a realistic test date and the right test centre from the start. With only 2 changes allowed, flexibility is much tighter than before.
Keep Your Details Safe
You’ll need access to your own:
driving licence number
theory test pass certificate
driving test booking reference
email and phone number
You’ll now be responsible for managing your own test.
Ask Your Instructor for Guidance
While instructors can no longer make bookings for you, we can still help you:
decide when you’re ready
choose the best test centre
understand the booking process
prepare properly for test day
Why the DVSA Is Making These Changes
The DVSA says these updates are designed to:
reduce misuse of the booking system
stop third-party resellers and bots
make test bookings fairer for genuine learners
improve access to practical driving tests over time
Many learners across the UK have struggled with long waiting times and limited test availability, and these rule changes are intended to make the system more transparent and fair.
